Stopping distance on highway?
Suppose I am driving down the highway at 60mph and the car in front of me is going the same speed.
Suppose the car in front of me were to see a cat crossing the highway, slam on the brakes as hard as they possibly can, and bring the car to a halt in five seconds.
Now suppose it takes me half a second to react upon seeing their brake lights, get both my feet on the brakes and five seconds to bring my tractor trailer to a halt.
What is a safe distance for me to tailgate this car?
1. You don’t tailgate………..
2. It will take a lot longer than 5 seconds…….
3. On a dry road you would need around 426 feet to stop…
4. So 25 car lengths behind them…….
