Is it necessary to shut the gas in our old Farmall M tractor when the park?

My grandfather (age86) has stopped its gas output antique tractors, and my father heard the same thing. Now, I and my father could ask do we really need to do. Where did this idea?

Is it necessary? Maybe not. If you? yes. can make it very difficult if the gas flooded the carburetor. trust your old Grandpa!
