How to troubleshoot aternator on Sears riding lawn tractor?

I have a 1980 11hp Sears riding lawn tractor with a Brigs & Stratton motor that has trouble keeping the battery charged. I want to know a method to check out the performance of the alternator to see if it is performing correctly. My ammeter only indicates about 3-4 amps output on what should be a 7 amp system.

You may only read a 3-4 amp charge unless you apply a load to the system. Check your battery for a parasitic drain, also you might want to have the battery load tested. Maybe the battery is the problem it is not taking the charge. I’m pretty sure there is only one diode in that type of charging system however check and make sure that the diode(s) are OK.
