john deere model 40 tractor quits when in gear?

hi i recently got a john deere model 40 tractor back from some1 and it was full of water needless to say we drained all the oil until the oil was clean. now when we try and start it ,it will idle fine but when it warms up and put into gear it will quit out shortly after and sometimes if you pull the choke out it will barely stay running. we have tryed cleaning the carb,check the points,spark plugs,etc and a few other things any1 have any ideas on what the problem is?

Change the fuel filters … Put some fuel conditioner in the fuel run it for a couple of hours . maybe half a day Then change the fuel filters again. Then you might repeat this one more time if needed. In these older tractors you get build up in the fuel tanks and you have to go through several tanks to get them clean. Also never run your tank low always fill before getting under a 1/4 tank (might be some trash in the tank)
