Every winter the same ice melt buying cycle happens. Consumers and industrial users will wait till the last seconds until they need to melt the ice and snow. Usually the news will talk about a winter storm coming and that will get some to buy ice melt. Many will go to the nearest big box hardware store and pick up a bag that says on it “ice Melt”. What they do not know is they are paying a steep retail price. A 10 or 20 pound bag of ice melt will go for 20 bucks or more. And its not the best snow melt either.

The retail brands will contain calcium chloride and sodium chloride that can destroy concrete, metal and brown out landscaping. The more expensive ice melters will contain magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and nitrogen. These do less damage to surfaces and reduce tracking. Even better (and more expensive) is liquid melt that does not contain any chlorides and is very safe and biodegradable.

So then how do you get a reasonable price for the better performing ice melters? The answer is by getting a bulk ice melt delivery. Not only do you get free delivery right to your door (which is better than dragging 50 pounders out of the store), you can negotiate a lower price shaving off 10′s, and even 100′s of dollars off the final price.

Don’t be shy about asking what the product contains because you want the best performance. Stay away from Sodium Chloride AKA Rock Salt. This only work to around 20 degrees above 0 (F) and tracks in residue not to mention pitting concrete and asphalt. Go with magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and nitrogen.

Packaging is very important. Ice melt by nature absorbs moisture. What happens if you leave an open bag, box or pail of snow melt out? It turns into a rock – unusable. So bags have to be made of very thick plastic that is re-sealable.

Box packaging has to be industrial strength. And the packaging is a plastic pail. These usually have a metal handle for easy lifting, and the plastic lid can be re sealed. If you have a choice go for a plastic pail, then an industrial strength box, then a heavy duty plastic bag.

The best bulk Ice melt (will melt the snow by default) will not track indoors, it will not harm concrete or asphalt, works to 40 below 0(F), and it will not brown out the landscaping. In fact nitrogen based ice melters will act as a fertilizer in the spring time. Typical bulk ice melt quantities for businesses will be in pallets of 2000 LBS. For consumers 300 LBS to 1000 LBS would get you excellent discounts!
