Nothing can ever be fresher than vegetables that are hand-picked straight from your backyard. When planning on setting up your own vegetable garden, it is important to choose the right plants that will thrive on your garden. Here are some information on plant and gardening seed.
Choosing the Plant Seeds For Your Garden
Consider Weather Conditions
Climate plays a very important role in ensuring that your garden seed will grow properly. While it is very tempting to have all the plants you like in your garden, keep in mind that there are certain plants that should not be grown on certain types of climate. Know the climate zone in your area and list all the possible plants that you can grow. It is also a good idea to take note of your areas frost dates, highs and lows of temperature.
If you do not know your climate zone, there are various websites that can offer you an assessment in your area so you can correctly pick the seeds that you can have in your garden.
Temperature
Caring for your plants starts from knowing the temperature they need to grow. There are seeds that need to be kept in warm temperature and there are those that favor cooler temperature.
Sowing
You cannot just sow the seeds anytime you want. Take note of the frost-free dates of your area and then count the number of weeks your seeds need to grow.
How to Select Plant Seeds to Buy
If you are a beginner, it might be a good idea to have plants that require less requirements and those that will not be hard for you to take care of.
- Select plant seeds that are easy to grow. Examples of these plants that you can start with are lettuce and swiss chard.
- Sunlight is also an important factor. Before buying any plant seed, you might want to check the care requirement printed on the back of the packet. If your area does not get enough sunlight, then you should also get plants that do not require much sun, otherwise you will just be wasting your money on seeds that will not grow on your garden.
- Check the “packed for” date of your seeds. “Packed for” dates are like “best before” dates on foods. The date should be within the year. Old seeds might not be good for planting anymore. Avoid buying packed seed on bargain prices. Most of the time, these are already old seeds.
- To help you save money, it is a good idea to buy seeds at tractor supply shops or farm stores. You might also want to buy in bulk to get discounts. Some seeds that are usually sold in bulk are beans, wheat and corn.
- If you are buying hybrid seeds, choose according to their bred characteristics. Some examples of these characteristics are drought resistance and ripeness.
There are numerous types of seeds that you can buy for your garden. To choose the right plant seeds to buy, it is very important that you do a bit of research first, buying the wrong seeds for your garden is not only wasting money but also wasting time.
